Camper & Volunteer Story - James
James' Camp Experience
My first time going to camp as a camper was back in the summer of 2014. I found out about camp because the Bates family attends our church. That first summer, I had so much fun that I kept returning for as long as possible. I remember one or two summers when I even did multiple weeks.
One thing that I enjoy about camp each year is the team games that we do. It brings a competitive atmosphere but also an opportunity to get to build relationships with the people that are on your team. Another thing that I looked forward to every year was the amazing and loving environment camp brought. The people who volunteer there always show genuine care for the kids and a desire to share the Gospel. Going to camp as a kid helped show me the love of Jesus Christ, and I was able to learn more about his plan and what he had done for me. This gave me the desire to want to go and serve at camp and show the same love of Christ that I experienced to the kids that would be coming in the future. So, as I got older and wasn’t able to go as a camper anymore, I started to volunteer.
I remember my first year there was 2021, so it was during COVID. Everything was a bit thrown off, and the weeks were shorter, so it was a bit of a different experience, but I enjoyed every second of it. From then on, I volunteered there every year I could. I got the chance to be a cabin leader and team captain, and it was awesome getting to connect with the kids and show them the love of Christ that I experienced as a camper. It was also amazing to see how the staff built each other up and were always so happy to serve. While being there, I realized how important it was to find rest and energy in the LORD. Although volunteering at camp can be such a joy, it can get tiring too. As the weeks went on and it was harder to keep on, I learned to lean into the LORD and trust in him to give me strength and energy.
