Carol's Camp Experience

As I reflect on 2025, I can’t help but think of my very first (finally!) trip to Camp of the Woods! I was able to participate in a work trip in June to help prepare for the summer camp season. I was not expecting to be affected the way I was. It brought back so many memories and emotions as well as new experiences and connections.

During my college years, I spent a summer on staff at a Bible Camp in the Santa Cruz mountains in California. Throughout the summer, “My Campers” ranged from older elementary-aged kiddos to special needs adults. There were amazing times of bible study, sharing, games, skits, food and fellowship. Relationships were formed, one of which was with my future husband, but others with fellow staffers and campers. It was a very special time.

Jump ahead almost 45 years to Summer 2025… finding myself back “at camp”, in another beautiful setting, with old friends and making new ones. I had no idea how much I needed this change of scenery, this time of retreat, refocus, and renewal. There were quiet mornings listening to the birds sing (and occasionally spotting a new one), times of sitting in the chapel contemplating scripture or a devotion, as well as preparing the lodge and other areas for the onset of campers arriving in a few weeks, with games and fun in the evenings. I think the thing that impacted me the most was something Johnnie shared at morning devotions one day, based on Prov. 27:17 “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” He challenged us to ponder, “Are other people better for being with you?” Part two of that was another question, “Am I surrounding myself with people who do the same for me?” There was a lot to consider in those two questions! I do hope and pray that I am a blessing to others, and that the light I shine reflects Jesus! I still think on those questions as they pop into my head!

I must admit, when our week was up, I was not ready to leave, but I knew I was better for spending that time away. I would encourage others to take advantage of any opportunity to get away from their day-to-day responsibilities and enjoy a change of scenery and time of ministry while surrounding yourself with a beautiful part of God’s creation at COTW! You may be surprised to see how God meets you when you set aside your expectations and open yourself up to His possibilities!
